Nica HOPE
Fabretto Children’s Foundation’s mission is to empower families in Nicaragua by developing economic opportunities and improving education and nutrition. Fabretto’s jewelry-making cooperative, Nica HOPE, was established in 2012 as a way to improve the lives of Nicaraguans living in and near Nicaragua’s largest trash dump, La Chureca. Nica HOPE currently employs 20 artisans and also supports students at its school by providing an afterschool jewelry making program. Creating jewelry allows the artisans to generate a stable source of income to support themselves and their families.
Meet the Artisans
Tatiana
For years, Tatiana sold items on the street to try and earn money to help her family. She learned how to make jewelry after a friend introduce her to Fabretto’s free skills training program. Now she helps her parents provide food and pay for her siblings’ school fees. She wants to study business administration and help others provide for themselves, just as Fabretto has helped her.
Christina
At age 16, Christina started working for Fabretto making jewelry at Nica HOPE. Fabretto was her support system. The teachers encouraged her to continue her education and provided her a daily FMSC meal. She and her husband were able to move into a home. Her experience at Fabretto allowed her to start a new job; making room at Nica HOPE for someone else have the same opportunities she was given
